The original Canadian Parliament buildings opened in 1866 however in 1916 a devastating fire burned the Centre Block to the ground, only the Library of Parliament remained. Rebuilding began in 1916 and Centre Block was given a copper roof replacing the original slate roof. In 1996 extensive renovations began on the Parliament Buildings including the replacement of the copper roof. The copper roofing was repurposed by artists with developmental disabilities. Known as the Under One Roof Collection, these artists have crafted and assortment of pins and brooches including the Sesquicentennial pin handed out to the volunteers in Nickel Belt and across Canada.
