Annual Fundraising Banquet to Complete a School in Rwanda
Le chemin de la lumière/Inzira y’Urumuri

Since 2011 Le chemin de la lumiere/Inzira y’Urumuri has been raising funds to build a school in Rwanda and today it’s almost completed.

In December 2011, Noreen Barbe, Adolphine Mukamanzi and Marie Ntaganda travelled to Rwanda. During their stay, they visited the village of Kavumu, where children and parents came to welcome them. During their conversation, the parents mentioned that their children travelled two hours to get to the closest school every day, which was particularly hard for the younger children. At the end of the day, the children come back exhausted, with no food or drink left in their lunch boxes, many of them get discouraged because they still have to complete their household chores and domestic duties upon their return. For those reasons, the parents were asking for help to build a school in their village.

When they returned to Canada, the three ladies could not stop thinking about the children of Kavumu and they decided to put together a team to start raising money to build a school in the village. It was at this time that the Le chemin de la lumière/Inzira y’Urumuri project was born.

Le chemin de la lumière/Inzira y’Urumuri poster for banquetTo ensure that the project is run properly, Inzira y’Urumuri approached L’AMIE, an organization which has been helping young children in third world countries for over 40 years, specifically in Rwanda for the last 10. They agreed to sponsor the project and manage the funds collected for the school. This partnership will allow a vast improvement to the quality of life of the Kavumu children.

Currently the three kindergarten classrooms of the primary school that will house kindergarten to grade 9 are almost completed and Le chemin de la lumière/Inzira y’Urumuri is now looking to raise funds to build washroom facilities so that the kindergarten classes can be opened early in 2017. The group’s long term objective is to continue fundraising so that classrooms for Grade 1-9 can be built. Students, teachers, parents, school boards and local businesses have all contributed to help make this worthwhile project a reality.

Le chemin de la lumière/Inzira y’Urumuri will be holding their annual fund raising banquet at Macdonald Cartier High School on November 26th at 5:30 p.m..  All profits will be used to complete the school in Rwanda. There will be delicious food, music, dancing an open bar and everyone is welcome to attend. If you are unable to attend donations are always welcome.
