Shawna Diane Partridge: Rule of Seconds

Rule of Seconds

Latitude 46 Publishing is excited to announce a series of events across Northern Ontario to mark the launch of Shawna Diane Partridge’s debut novella Rule of Seconds.

“We are extremely excited to introduce Shawna to the Canadian literary landscape,” said publisher Heather Campbell. “She has written a smart, provocative and insightful story about the North that people will not be able to put down.”

Laura Gregorini added, “The depth of research Shawna undertook in writing Rule of Seconds makes her story that much more intriguing.”

Rule of Seconds interlaces the extraordinary lives of four generations of women in one family in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Perhaps one of the first works of fiction to depict an epileptic heroine, Rule of Seconds follows 26-year-old Sheila, the narrator-protagonist as she digs into her past and that of her family in hopes of unearthing the cause of her disease.

Spanning from the 1920s to present day, Rule of Seconds focuses on the unconventional life of Sheila’s great grandmother who owned a three-storey boarding house and ran an illegal speakeasy in the basement.

Rule of Seconds meshes historical research and fiction into a compelling drama that speaks to four generations of hard women, defying the conventions of their era, time and again.

Rule of Seconds is available at, Chapters Indigo and at select independent booksellers across Canada.

Copies are $15 each.
