Scott Haddow, hard at work in his office for Wild Northerner Magazine.

I would always rather be in the bush or on a lake than any other place. I live by this. It is why I started The Wild Northerner Magazine. I worked in the journalism industry for newspapers full time for nine years and then another four-plus years as a freelancer.

I needed a new challenge and publishing my own digital magazine was it. The magazine was started May 2015. I put a focus on the human interest side of the outdoors in northern Ontario. I love the passion people have for the wilderness and nature in our region. There are so many stories to tell and hear about. If it happens outdoors, I cover it. From fishing to camping to hiking to sailing and everything else. I offer free subscriptions, so check it out at

I’m going to do blogs for this new venture by South Side Story. I will update them regularly, so keep coming back to see what is new.

I love being outdoors in my canoe. That is my thing. I love fishing, hunting and exploring in it. I have been to some amazing places because of that 17-foot piece of wood, Kevlar and carbon. I get a real kick out of exploring the backcountry regions of provincial parks. The interaction with wildlife can be exhilarating. There isn’t much better than paddling a canoe beside a swimming moose. I have been lucky enough to been up close and personal with these magnificent creatures on a few occasions. It’s why I get outside and get into nature.

We live in a place bursting with beautiful wilderness and I take advantage of it. Being outdoors doesn’t have to involve catching a huge fish or going somewhere far away.

Fun fishing holes and scenes that leave you in awe are right here in northern Ontario and Greater Sudbury.

I got involved with this because I am eager to see what other people enjoy around these parts for their outdoors fun. There are many adventures to be had. The more people join and share their experiences, the better it will be.

It will be a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing everyone’s outdoors adventures.
